The Arrested Development of Carson McCullers

February 29, 2024

Maggie Doherty reviews “Carson McCullers: A Life,” Mary Dearborn's new biography of the author of “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" in The New Yorker. An excerpt is included below:

Throughout her life, the novelist Carson McCullers struck observers as preternaturally young. The biographer Leon Edel, who met her when she was thirty-seven, remarked on her “childish wonder.” The French novelist Françoise Sagan wrote that she had the “laugh of a child forever lost.” Like a child, she loved sweets, Christmas, and receiving presents on her birthday. Though she was...

Fictions about the Forces Driving Migration

Think of — to use a purposefully loaded term—an “immigrant novel.” Central to the narrative is a certain kind of character: a recent immigrant, or a child of immigrants, who moved to seek opportunity in the United States because of financial, political, or other hardship in their native country. The protagonist must navigate a new environment, such as school or work, while maintaining some level of connection to their origins. Challenges ensue; questions arise. What do they owe the people they’ve left behind? What does it mean to become an American?

How The Sympathizer Pulled off an Audacious, Ferocious Adaptation

February 15, 2024
It didn’t take long for Park Chan-wook to realize his Sympathizer star Robert Downey Jr. was a kindred spirit. And when Downey took on the task of playing a bunch of different characters in HBO’s new limited series (premiering April 14), the Oscar-nominated actor too kept everyone on...
