NYT Book Review: All That’s Unseen by Emilee Hackney '20

Emilee Hackney’s achingly intelligent memoir, “All That’s Unseen,” opens with a scene at Deliverance Christian Church in Tazewell County, in rural southwest Virginia, where she was born and raised. Five-year-old Emilee stands beside her mother, watching congregants flood the altar and fall to their knees, weeping and moaning and speaking in tongues. Emilee feels a “great, urgent energy” pressing down on her shoulders. Her knees buckle and she sinks to the ground, held there by a “mysterious and all-consuming force.”
