English CWNM. Magazine Journalism

Instructor: Maggie Doherty
Monday, 12:00-2:45pm | Location: TBD
Enrollment: Limited to 12 students

This course will focus on longform journalism published in magazines. We will read and analyze published magazine pieces, including profiles, investigative pieces and other features. Our reading list will be drawn from magazines large (Harper’s, The New Yorker) and small (n+1). We will discuss both the process of writing such pieces—pitching, researching, reporting, drafting, and editing—and the techniques required to write informative, engaging, elegant magazine journalism. In addition to short writing exercises performed in class and outside of class, each student will write one long piece over the course of the semester and will workshop the piece with the whole class. We will also discuss the ethical issues that arise while reporting. Guest speakers will offer their perspective on writing and editing magazines.

Supplemental Application Information: Please write a letter of introduction (1-2 pages) giving a sense of who you are, your writing experience, and your current goals for your writing. You are welcome to describe any journalism experience you have, though none is necessary. Please also include a 500-750-word sample writing sample of any kind of prose writing. This could be an academic paper or it could be creative fiction or nonfiction.
