Welcome Back BBQ
Over 100 attendees came out in the summer heat for some southern hospitality and cuisine— with a touch of English charm— at this year’s annual Concentrator Barbecue, which took place on the Barker Center lawn at the beginning of the fall term. This was our fourth time hosting the event, which is open to all prospective freshmen and sophomores interested in English as a concentration.
Many current concentrators, faculty, and staff were on hand to welcome and share a meal with prospective students giving them an opportunity to get a real taste of the department. The prospective students were especially grateful to demystify what it is to be an English concentrator by speaking with current concentrators and faculty in an informal setting on a variety of topics from creative writing, the thesis process, course load, to their overall feelings of the department.
The barbecue was also a great way for returning concentrators to get up-to-date with their peers, have some face time with the faculty, and to give service to the department and Harvard. The most rewarding element was the opportunity to reflect on their experience and time in the English Department.
Also well received were the tasty offerings provided by Blue Ribbon Catering of Newton Highlands. The menu included ribs, barbecue chicken, jerk chicken, pulled pork, mac and cheese, and cornbread with plenty of lemonade… and, of course, pie.
A good time was had by all, and we look forward to next year!
