The Final Round

The final round of the 2014 Boylston Prizes For Elocution was held on Monday, April 7th in the W.S. Fong Auditorium. Beginning with nineteen contestants in the preliminary round, which was held on April 2nd, the list of finalists was narrowed down to eight undergraduates: Julian Lucas, Matthew Barrieau, Aisha Down, Sorrel Nielsen, Myles McDonough, Alice Abracen, Nathan Hilgartner, and Cassandra Euphrat Weston. After all of the finalists delivered their selections, a panel of three judges (a lawyer, a member of the clergy, and a professor) met to choose the winners. First place was awarded to Cassandra Euphrat Weston for her delivery of an excerpt from “Sonnets Uncorseted” by Maxine Kumin, and second place went to Matthew Barrieau, who recited an excerpt from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce.
